"The Highlights of Lisbon"

(Full-Day tour)

This tour takes you to see the most important monuments of Lisbon and the different quarters that make up this fascinating city.

We will show you the huge Edward VII Park, the Marquis of Pombal square, the grand avenue of Liberdade, the Rossio and the Comércio squares in the Baixa, Lisbon's downtown. In the Old Town you will visit the 12th century romanesque cathedral and the Church of Santo António which was built on the site of the house where Saint Anthony was born in 1195. In the Alfama quarter you will discover a still very picturesque Lisbon: stunning views from belvederes embellished with bougainvilleas, blue and white tile panels, a maze of narrow twisted streets, alleys and stairways...the oldest quarter of Lisbon!

On the opposite hill is Bairro Alto, a quarter that originated in the 16th century. It has a geometric lay-out and was the “home” of the Jesuits in Portugal who built there the São Roque Church, one of the hidden treasures of Lisbon: behind an unremarkable 16 th century exterior is an elegant Baroque interior that includes what may be the most sumptuous and costly chapel in the world. From the nearby Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara you will enjoy another great view of the city, the downtown area and the Tagus.

At the western limit of Lisbon is Belém, the monumental area of Lisbon, where you will visit three of the most famous monuments of the capital of Portugal. We will stop for photographs by 16 th century Belém Tower and the Monument of the Discoveries, and visit the Church of the Jerónimos Monastery. This former monastery of the monks of Saint Jerome was built in the 16th century to commemorate the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama. The church of the monastery is the best example of the Manueline style, an elaborate decorative style inspired in the newly discovered flora and fauna of India and the Spice Islands. The church was the Royal Pantheon of king Manuel I. Apart from the royal tombs, you will see the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, the great 16th century Portuguese poet.

We will take you to the most famous pastry shop of Lisbon to taste a local specialty: the “pastéis de Belém”, custard tarts have been baked in this pastry shop since 1837.
